Types of Massage
Swedish Massage is the most gentle and relaxing type of massage. It is also the most common. Its main purpose is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. The result is fresh oxygenated blood flow into the muscles that boosts energy levels. Swedish Massage also improves flexibility while easing tension. Massage therapists use long smooth strokes, kneading, and circular movements using massage lotion or oil as well as vibrational taps.
Therapeutic Massage provides relief from chronic health conditions such as headaches or back pain. It involves the manipulation of superficial and deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to enhance function, aid in the healing process, as well as promote relaxation and well-being.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue Massage is used for chronically tight or painful muscles, repetitive strain, postural problems, or recovery from injury. The massage therapist uses long smooth strokes, kneading, and circular movements that focus pressure on layers of muscles, tendons, and other deep tissues. It is common to feel sore for a day or two after the massage, but it is well worth it for the massage’s therapeutic benefits – relieving chronic patterns of tension and helping with muscle injuries.
Sports Massage is not just for professional athletes, but for people who are active and work out often. The focus is on preventing and treating injury and enhancing athletic performance. Sports massage is also used in rehabilitation as it helps with muscle strains, and aids healing after a sports injury. A combination of techniques are used. The strokes are generally faster than Swedish massage. Sports Massage also involves stretching which helps to loosen muscles and increase flexibility.
